During my high school career I received an education at the low end of Bloom's Taxonomy. Mainly knowledge, understanding, and on rare occasions, application. I remember cramming for tests by memorizing information that I had written on note cards. I remember zoning off many times also because I found myself bored with the constant note taking. It was so repetitive. I am a hands on learner, so writing out note cards or studying formulas over and over didn't really benefit me. I would study these notes, take the test, then within a few weeks I forgot the majority of the information.
In the beginning of my post secondary education I also received an education on the low end of Bloom's Taxonomy. Most of the general education classes were all note taking, writing papers, or taking tests. Not until I was well into my major did the teaching methods move up on Bloom's Taxonomy. I can remember doing more hands on things and applying certain ideas in real life.
I think one of the major reasons for this is because in high school our minds are still developing. We hadn't had many experiences yet to make us think more in depth. Our lives were only just beginning in the area of education. As we got older we started to mature and think more in depth about situations and had experienced many things to get us to where we are today. Things have more meaning because we are creating and applying each day, that's what happens when you get older.

I agree with you on looking back to high school, it was a lot of note taking. I even think more in College constant note taking very little hands on or less it was an anatomy class or something else hands on!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to here you had such a mundane K-12 education. But, I remember doing the same things. There were less requirements placed on teachers and schools back then I guess.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you had a more fulfilling college learning experience. I also, had the same experience when I went to Penn State and East Stroudsburg. I also enjoy analyzing, creating and evaluating. The majority of my educational career was spent memorizing facts and practicing skills.
It seems that alot of us agree that we learned on the lower end of Blooms Taxonomy in high school, and as we went further on in our education we moved up Blooms Taxonomy scale.
